The defeat of Alexander the Great is often attributed to the Indian king Porus (also known as King Puru) during the Battle of Hydaspes in 326 BCE. The battle took place near the Hydaspes River (now known as the Jhelum River) in what is present-day Punjab, Pakistan. Porus led a formidable army, and despite being outnumbered, he put up a strong resistance against Alexander and his Macedonian forces.

The Battle of Hydaspes was a fierce encounter, with Porus employing clever tactics and utilizing his war elephants to great effect. However, ultimately, Alexander’s superior military strategy and well-disciplined troops led to Porus’s defeat. Despite losing the battle, Porus’s bravery and valiant efforts earned the respect and admiration of Alexander, who not only spared his life but also reinstated him as the ruler of his kingdom.

While Porus is often credited with giving Alexander a tough fight, it is worth noting that the overall conquest of Alexander’s empire was a result of various factors, including his troops’ exhaustion, the resistance from local populations, and logistical challenges. Ultimately, it was a combination of these factors rather than a single defeat that led to Alexander’s decision to turn back and halt his eastward conquests.
